Position title:                    Development Director

Reports to:                         Managing Director

Classification:                   Full-time, exempt position

Salary Range:                     $52,000 - $70,000 

 

Sisters Folk Festival Inc., an Oregon non-profit organization, presents world-class music, cultural entertainment and arts- and music-based educational outreach programs. Since its inception as a music festival in 1995, SFF has evolved into a year-round cultural arts and education organization with a budget of slightly over $1 million.

 

Job Purpose

The Development Director designs and implements strategies to engage and solicit support for the organization, including establishing systems and creative approaches for fundraising to meet strategic objectives.   

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate in and support the strategic plans of SFF with the Managing and Creative Directors and board leadership team
  • Cultivate and manage major giving and donor programs
  • Manage the Sisters Folk Arts Circle membership program & relationships
  • Manage fundraising events including My Own Two Hands
  • Solicit and manage foundation, business sponsor and community support

 Duties and Tasks

  • Participate in and support the strategic plans of SFF
    • Participate in strategic planning & long-range goal-setting
    • Create and implement a development plan aligned with strategic plan objectives, including detailed goals, strategies, timelines, budgets, donor-engagement strategies and evaluation of results
    • Create and manage annual fundraising budget in collaboration with the Managing Director
    • Ensure fundraising best practices regarding donor confidentiality, acknowledgement and gifts are in place and monitor fundraising trends, issues and regulations to ensure SFF is compliant
    • Train, motivate, support and coordinate board members, fundraising volunteers and staff to help implement the development plan
    • Act as lead staff member for Fundraising Committee

 

  • Major Giving & Donor Program
    • Grow existing major giving program
    • Ask and steward major donors and major donor prospects to meet development plan goals
    • Design, manage and carry out major donor cultivation events
    • Plan and implement an annual year-end giving campaign
    • Provide assistance with capital campaign efforts
    • Coordinate content, printing and distribution of fundraising materials
    • Track return on investment, results vs budget and overall effectiveness of fundraising effort
    • Formalize SFF’s Planned Giving Program
    • Oversee donor database

 

  • Sisters Folk Arts Circle (SFAC) membership program
    • Maintain exceptional relationships with current members and cultivate new members
    • Oversee the creation of solicitation materials (both print and electronic)
    • Manage current and prospective membership lists
    • Coordinate annual SFAC member recognition and renewal event
    • Annually evaluate the effectiveness of the membership program

 

  • My Own Two Hands and Other Fundraising Events
    • Create and manage fundraising events and manage event details in coordination with staff & volunteers
    • Solicit interest, enthusiasm and engagement of current and new donors prior to fundraising events
    • Prepare board members and staff for key roles during events to better engage and/or acknowledge donors
    • Evaluate effectiveness of fundraising events, identify and implement needed changes or improvement opportunities
    • Ensure appropriate acknowledgement and appreciation post-events

 

  • Foundation, Community & Business/Corporate Support
    • Build relationships with foundations, local businesses, corporate or other key stakeholders to advance the fundraising goals of the organization
    • Create and manage a grant strategy and successfully procure foundation support to meet development plan goals
    • Manage SFF’s sponsor program. Create opportunities for deeper involvement with SFF’s programs
    • Represent SFF at organization and community events

 

Experience and Knowledge

Successful applicants will demonstrate:

  • Minimum of 5 years of broad, demonstrated fundraising experience, preferably with an arts-based or cultural non-profit organization or with an educational institution
  • Passion for and a commitment to the mission of SFF
  • Knowledge of fundraising and donor management systems
  • Demonstrated track record of researching, writing and receiving grant funding
  • Ability to develop creative ways to raise funds and seek innovative funding opportunities
  • Experience creating annual or multi-year budgets, revenue and expense forecasts, managing grants and knowledge of nonprofit budgeting principles
  • Knowledge of federal and state legislation affecting charities and donations
  • Ability to anticipate and respond to the needs of donors at all levels
  • Ability to work effectively in a small team environment and maintain positive working relationships with others, both internally and externally
  • Highly organized with the ability to set priorities, develop work schedules, monitor progress toward goals, adjust, innovate, track and provide details, data and information on all fundraising activities
  • Speak, listen and write in a clear, engaging manner using appropriate and effective communication tools and techniques including an understanding of the best use of social media tools for fundraising
  • Strong sense of integrity, discretion and ability to maintain confidentiality of donor information
  • Ability to do some travel, if required, to meet with foundations, sponsors or major donors

 

Other Desired Skills:

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including Excel and Word
  • Experience with donor databases
  • Experience with a successful capital campaign

 

Education

Master’s degree or higher from a college or university in a field applicable to the duties of the position or a comparable level of combined work experience and education.

 

Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • The Development Director will spend significant time in a small office setting with time out of the office interacting with donors, supporters, attending SFF events and activities
  • Work schedules are flexible, including occasional after-hours and weekends as needed to attend events
  • Some lifting and carrying of tables, supplies, and other materials may be required when setting up events
  • Travel required via personal auto from time to time
